Easy access to lateral flow tests through our workplaces or high street pharmacies is causing confusion about what to do if you or someone you look after shows symptoms of COVID

1. LATERAL FLOW TESTS:

These are the home testing kits (given by schools/chemists). This test should only be used if you DO NOT have symptoms of COVID-19 (ASYMPTOMATIC testing). These rapid home tests are done as routine testing for schools/workplaces and can pick up undetected cases.

  • If you have a POSITIVE lateral flow test then you will need to book a PCR swab to be done at a testing site via 119 or www.gov.uk/get-coronavirus-test. You must continue to self-isolate until your PCR swab is back.

2. PCR TEST:

If you or someone you look after (such as child under 16 years old)have symptoms of COVID-19 (cough, temperature or loss of smell/taste then you need to book at PCR test. DO NOT use a lateral flow test/rapid home test (they do not provide confirmation of COVID-19 infection nor do they absolutely exclude it in the presence of symptoms).

  • You must self-isolate immediately if you develop symptoms of coronavirus. Follow this link to the gov.uk website for more information on self-isolation and treatment of COVID symptoms.
