GP Training

Ainsdale Medical Centre has been involved in GP training and education for over 40 years. In fact a lot of local GP’s working in and around Southport have been trained at Ainsdale Medical Centre. We are accredited by the Mersey Deanery as a GP training Practice. This process usually takes place every 3 years and the last accreditation was in 2013. The accreditation process is a very thorough one and ensures that we maintain high standards in terms of our administrative structure, record keeping and commitment to continuing education.

Dr Bennett is our current GP trainer, and has been involved in GP education since joining the Practice in 2001. He formally became a trainer in 2008. The entire Practice is committed to GP training and education and all of our team play a part in creating a robust and supportive learning environment for our Registrars.

GP Registrars are qualified doctors who usually have been working in hospitals for several years gaining experience and specialist skills ready for life as a GP. During the final year of specialist GP training the registrars must pass exams (AKT and CSA) in order to pass the MRCGP exam. This in conjunction with a satisfactory GP Trainer report will allow them to be qualified GP’s and members of the Royal College of general Practitioners.

As part of their training, GP registrars will conduct surgeries alongside the other GP’s at Ainsdale Medical Centre under the supervision of Dr Bennett. They will also be asked to video record some consultations for training purposes. The recordings are done in accordance with standards laid down by the Royal College of General Practitioners and as a patient you are entitled to ask for the camera not to be used during your appointment. The recordings are strictly confidential and are only used for training purposes.

Prospective GP Registrars:

We are a long established GP training practice committed to education and evidence based medicine. All of our practice team are committed to GP training and importantly know what is involved to help you get through your exams. We have GP’s with specialist skills in Cardiology, Dermatology, Minor Surgery, Diabetes, Occupational Health Medicine and Family Planning.

We encourage GP registrars to get involved in teaching and encourage them to facilitate a tutorial with the medical students which we video and use this to reflect on their teaching skills.

Dr Bennett can provide more details upon request.

Medical Students

We are also involved in teaching medical students from the University of Liverpool. They are supervised by Dr Quinlan. They will do very closely supervised consultations and sit in in with their GP supervisor but, unlike GP registrars and foundation doctors (who can consult independently), will not make any treatment decisions without approval from their GP supervisor.

Nurse Training

We are an accredited training practice for Edge Hill University.  Sr. O'Connor and Sr. North frequently have student nurses working under their supervision and guidance.

As you can see Ainsdale Medical Centre is highly committed to its status as a training and educational practice.

If you have any questions about our training programme please ask to speak to Paul Ashby the Practice Manager.
