Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Screening – a quick test that could save your life
An abdominal aortic aneurysm, also known as an AAA, is a swelling in the aorta—the main blood vessel that carries blood from the heart through the abdomen. AAAs often have no symptoms, but they can become life-threatening if they are not found early. Screening involves a simple, painless ultrasound scan of the abdomen, which usually takes around 10 to 15 minutes, with the result provided at the appointment.
Men registered with a GP are automatically invited for a one-off AAA screening appointment during the year they turn 65. Screening is recommended for anyone aged 65 or over who was assigned male at birth. If you are over 65 and have never been screened, you can contact the local screening service directly to request an appointment—you do not need to wait for an invitation from the practice.
